History of Capernaum Church
In 1960 a group of Christians living in the Umhlatuzana area, gathered together in the verandah of a home on 35th Avenue for church services. This was the home of the Williams Family. Listed among the founding member were the families of N Williams, Poonsamy Frank, George Naidoo, Hansen and John Frank. This marked the humble beginnings of Capernaum Temple. The first leader of this assembly was Missionary Gerber. He was later succeeded by Missionary John Frank. In 1961 the gathering was formalized and Capernaum church was established.
One of the members, Sister Mummy Frank vowed before God, that if her son Cecil’s sight was restored, she would build a Church in her backyard, to the glory of God. When the Lord Jesus miraculously healed her son, the faithful Sister Frank, together with other members (men, women and children) labored over weekends making cement blocks. A builder by the name of James built the church. A modest structure was constructed and was officially opened on 28 September 1963 by the Late Pastor JF Rowlands.
At this time Missionary John Frank was at the helm In 1965 Pastor VR Enoch was inducted as the pastor of Capernaum. He served the church until 1983.On the 6th December 1984 Pastor Denis Stanley Bawden was inducted as the pastor of Capernaum. This humble servant of God served until 2003. It was during Pastor Bawden’s leadership, that we purchased our existing church premises at 129 Chatsworth Main Road in 2000. On 1st of November 2003 Pastor Rajen Nadesan took over the reigns from Pastor Bawden.
On the 9th of April 2004, we moved to the current premises. With the breaking of a few walls and a coat of paint, we adapted a house into a small quaint church. in November 2011, our application to have this residential site rezoned to a religious site was granted by the Durban City Council. The building project commenced in May 2012. We have been blessed as God enabled us to achieve much. Sadly on 15 January 2013, we lost our dear Pastor Denis Bawden. In May 2013, the original house was broken down and the new roof was installed. On the 24th May 2013, the foyer of the new building was dedicated to Pastor Denis Bawden. We thank God for blessing Capernaum thus far and are confident that God is going to carry Our Church to greater heights. We celebrate a faithful God!!
